Shortcut Target
Available for: Single Shortcut and Internet-Shortcut Files (.lnk & .url files)

Ever looked at a shortcut file on your desktop, Start menu, Favorites menu or elsewhere and wondered what file or URL it referred to? Shortcut Target makes it easy to find out.

Right click a shortcut file and choose Shortcut Target from the ShellToys XP menu. A simple dialog will appear showing the full path or URL to the item referred to by the shortcut and three or four buttons:

File/Folder Shortcuts:

  • Click OK to close the dialog (if all you wanted to do was see the path to the item).

  • Click Run to open the file, folder or program the shortcut refers to (this saves you the trouble of closing the dialog and double-clicking the shortcut to run it).

  • Click Go to Folder to open the folder containing the item the shortcut refers to. The item itself will be selected automatically.

  • Click Copy Path to copy the full path of the targeted item to the clipboard (including any parameters tagged to the path).

Internet Shortcuts:

  • Click OK to close the dialog (if all you wanted to do was see the URL of the item).

  • Click Open URL to open the link referred to by the shortcut in your default browser (or FTP client, or email program, depending upon the type of URL).

  • Click Copy URL to copy the full URL of the targeted item to the clipboard.

If the path to the item is too long to be displayed in the dialog, a shortened path will be shown. Move the mouse over it to see the full path in a tooltip.
